History
The Carnival of Venice has very ancient origins, which some documents trace back as far as the 12th century. Ever since, the lagoon city has stood out for its passion for blending popular traditions, aristocratic elegance and a spirit of transgression. In the days of the Serenissima, Carnival was not just a time for fun and leisure but a true collective ritual that allowed social hierarchies to be suspended, if only for a while: thanks to masks, nobles and commoners could mingle in the calli, moving in an atmosphere of intriguing freedom and mystery. The main celebrations were held in Piazza San Marco and in the sumptuous palazzi overlooking the Grand Canal, where music, dancing and banquets often went on until dawn.
Over the centuries the costumes became ever more elaborate and refined, with silk, velvet and lace details, often paired with masks finely decorated with gold and feathers. The fame of the Carnival of Venice spread beyond the borders of the Republic: writers, artists and adventurers from all over Europe came to the city to experience the magic of an event like no other. After a period of decline, when the festival was even banned by some authorities for reasons of public order, the tradition was reborn in the 1970s, gradually regaining its former splendour and enjoying ever-growing international success. Today the timeless atmosphere of the Carnival of Venice continues to enchant travellers from all over the world, offering total immersion in the history and culture of the Serenissima: a unique experience in which past and present merge in a dance of elegance and imagination.
