The 152nd edition of the Carnevale di Viareggio promises to be an extraordinary event, full of emotion and surprises. This year the opening will be entrusted to Cristina D’Avena, an icon of Italian music and queen of cartoon theme songs, who will kick off one of Italy’s most famous and best-loved events.
Cristina D’Avena takes centre stage at the opening
The Carnevale di Viareggio 2025 will begin on8 February, with an unmissable opening event.
- At 3:00 pm: Cristina D’Avena will perform in Piazza Mazzini with a concert for fans of all ages, revisiting the songs that marked the childhood of millions of Italians.
- At 4:30 pm: The official opening ceremony will take place.
- At 5:00 pm: The triple cannon shot will start the first masked parade by night, with spectacular allegorical floats and a fireworks show lighting up the sky over Viareggio.
Did you know? Cristina D’Avena, born in Bologna on 6 July 1964, began her music career at just three years old, taking part in the Zecchino d’Oro with “Il valzer del moscerino”. With more than 700 songs recorded, she has become a legend of cartoon theme songs in Italy.
100 years of papier-mâché: a historic celebration
The 2025 edition celebrates a special anniversary: the centenary of the introduction of papier-mâché, the material that revolutionised the building of allegorical floats.
- In 1925: Master Antonio D’Arliano introduced this technique, making it possible to create lighter, more complex and more spectacular structures.
- Commemorative events:
- Guided tours of the Museum of the Cittadella del Carnevale, where you can discover the history and evolution of this art.
- Workshops on making floats and masks, to involve visitors in the magic of Carnival.
