On the night of San Lorenzo, with the Cittadella del Carnevale packed, the sketches of the works that will parade along the Viali a Mare in 2027 were unveiled. On stage, for the first time in front of the Carnival crowd, was the Foundation’s new president, Riccardo Maria Monti. There are nine first-category papier-mâché giants, alongside the second-category floats, the group masquerades and the individual masks.
The Notte dei Bozzetti
On Monday 10 August 2026, as tradition dictates, the Cittadella del Carnevale hosted the Notte dei Bozzetti, the event dedicated to presenting the designs for the Carnevale di Viareggio 2027. The papier-mâché artists took to the stage to reveal the visions and themes of the next edition to the public, in a show of choreography, costumes, music and projections. Entry was free and for the occasion the Museo Carnevale Viareggio stayed open in the evening, as announced by the Comune di Viareggio.

Italy’s carnival capital
In Viareggio the allegorical floats have always been the heart of the festival. Every year the artists create huge papier-mâché works with extraordinary movements and, through the art of satire and allegory, tell the great themes of society and the world, often ahead of their time. Italy’s carnival capital, which has been celebrating since 1873, lives its tradition all year round, between the Cittadella, home to the master craftsmen’s hangars, and the dedicated museum.
You can already glimpse the stories in the sketches: the penguins of “E con Tango siamo in tre”, the Pinocchio of “Buffoni e burattini”, the books and screens of “Disconnessi per volare”. In the coming months, in the hangars of the Cittadella, these drawings will become great papier-mâché works.
Alongside the sketches, the Foundation also announced the poster for the Carnevale di Viareggio 2027, the image that will accompany the communication campaign together with the new giant prints of the floats, 6 metres by 3, which will brighten up the seafront all year (official news).
