History
The Gran Carnevale di Maiori began in the early 1970s, when a passion for papier-mâché and the wish to celebrate the end of winter led a few groups of townspeople to organise the first parades. Over the years the event has grown steadily, earning a prominent place among Italy’s historic carnivals.
Today the whole community of Maiori comes together to stage a real spectacle: the float sketches, the result of months of hard work and creativity, often draw on satire, fairy tales or topical themes. The papier-mâché structures, true works of ephemeral art, reach impressive sizes and parade along the Lungomare Amendola to music and captivating choreography.
What makes the Gran Carnevale di Maiori even more special is its setting: this pearl of the Amalfi Coast, with its breathtaking scenery, the scent of citrus and the flavours of Campanian cooking, offers a complete and unforgettable experience. That is why, in recent years, the event has won major recognition and draws a growing number of tourists, captivated by the blend of folklore and natural beauty.
